Interstate Water Issues

Overview

ADECA’s Office of Water Resources is designated as the primary state agency monitoring interstate issues that impact state waters.

In this role, OWR has been involved in supporting Alabama’s interests in the interstate conflicts involving the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa and Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basins, known as the “Water Wars,” since the creation of the office.

OWR provides technical support to the state’s legal team in the ongoing litigation involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the states of Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

The division also participates in negotiations regarding water allocation formulas that will prescribe how these interstate water resources will be shared.
