Gov. Ivey awards grant for mental health facility in Brantley

MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $350,000 grant to establish a mental health facility and boost employment in the town of Brantley.

The Community Development Block Grant will provide water and sewer services for South Central Alabama Mental Health to construct a rural crisis diversion center. The estimated $10 million facility will employ 65 people.

South Central Alabama Mental Health provides services for people suffering from mental health issues, substance abuse and disabilities in Butler, Coffee, Covington and Crenshaw counties

“This much-needed facility will enable people suffering from mental health issues to gain local access to treatment while also creating 65 new jobs in southern Crenshaw County,” Gov Ivey said. “The project represents the good that can be achieved when governmental partners team up to address community needs.”

The new 21,207-square-foot facility will be located off U.S. Highway 331 north of Brantley on a four-acre site provided by the town.

The facility will be open 24 hours, seven days a week to serve the public, and assist emergency responders in treating patients

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey and the town of Brantley in this project that will provide direct jobs involving the center and indirect jobs involving supplies and services,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

Gov. Ivey notified Mayor Bernie Sullivan that the grant had been approved. The town is providing a local match of $209,875.

ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
