Gov. Ivey announces Project Safe Neighborhoods grant to reduce domestic violence in Jefferson County

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $100,000 grant to continue the effort to reduce domestic violence in Jefferson County.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods grant to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office is designed to step up domestic violence prosecutions while ensuring that victims and their families are provided the needed services to recover from the trauma of abuse.

“Domestic violence damages lives and, in many instances, can lead to deadly consequences,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend our law enforcement officers, prosecutors and victims service professionals in Jefferson County for their professionalism in helping victims and holding offenders accountable.”

The District Attorney’s Office will combine forces with the One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center, a coalition of local law enforcement agencies and nonprofit organizations, to ensure victims and their families receive needed support. One avenue of that support is through the center’s Camp HOPE which teaches a curriculum based on setting and accomplishing goals and having hope for a brighter future.

Funds will also assist the DA’s Domestic Violence Unit to step up investigation, prosecutions and sentencing for domestic violence offenders and whenever possible work with offenders to reduce violent behaviors.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“ADECA is pleased to align itself with Gov. Ivey and this program that seeks to help victims while working to reduce domestic violence in Jefferson County,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
