Gov. Ivey announces grant to improve sewer services in Fayette

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $350,000 grant to improve sewer service and eliminate a public health concern in the city of Fayette.

Funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission will be used to replace a major component of the town’s sewer system. The affected area serves 107 households and two major industries.

“This project will ensure residents and businesses of a properly operating sewer system and ease any concerns about overflows and health issues,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to announce this grant that will benefit the city and its residents.”

ARC funds will enable the city to replace a deteriorating 61-year-old sewer pumping station and eliminate the threat of sewage back up in yards and ditches. The sewage line, located along Alabama Highway 159, also serves Showa Glove Plant and O’Neal Manufacturing Services, two of the city’s largest manufacturing plants.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program in Alabama.

“ARC has been a valued partner of ADECA and Alabama’s towns and cities for more than 50 years and continues to provide invaluable assistance,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I commend local leaders for their attention to this problem, and ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey and the ARC to help with the solution.”

Gov. Ivey notified Fayette Mayor Rod Northam that the grant had been approved. The city of Fayette has pledged $180,975 in local funds for the project.

ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments. The agency’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Fayette County, are part of the ARC region and eligible for funds.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
