Gov. Ivey awards grant to assist Tallassee Rapid Response Team

MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $150,000 grant to assist the City of Tallassee in developing a rapid response team through the Tallassee Police Department.

The team is designed to respond to active shooter situations and other potentially dangerous situations in which someone is at high-risk that could result in injury or death. The specially trained team will be part of the Tallassee Police Department and will be able to respond to any situation at nearby schools, industrial plants, shopping centers, churches or dams.

Grant funds will be used to purchase a dedicated vehicle for the eight-person team along with medical equipment, ballistic vests, helmets, uniforms, firearms and body cameras. Funds will also be used to cover training for the eight officers on the team.

“Having a team of trained officers ready to respond at a moment’s notice to dangerous situations can save many lives and protect the critical needs of communities,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the Tallassee Police Department for creating a team and a plan for increased community protection.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation and water resources management.

“ADECA stands with Gov. Ivey in her goal of protecting the lives of all Alabamians by ensuring local law enforcement has access to vital resources and training,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
