Gov. Ivey awards grants for domestic violence response units in four counties

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded six grants totaling more than $364,000 for domestic violence response units in four counties.

The specialized units investigate and prosecute domestic violence cases and provide support to victims.

“Victims of abuse need and deserve justice for the crimes committed against them” Gov. Ivey said.  “I commend the work of these dedicated professionals for striving to make their communities safer by holding abusers accountable and by assisting victims.”

The Elmore County Commission has received two grants totaling $152,477 to support the 19th Circuit Domestic Violence Unit, which brings together prosecutors, victim service officers and law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute domestic violence cases in Autauga, Chilton and Elmore counties.

The Chilton County Commission is using a $60,000 grant to hire a victim advocate to train deputies, support victims and collect data on domestic violence in Chilton County.

The Montgomery County Commission is using a $70,730 grant to support the Violence Against Women Prosecution Unit, which along with prosecution of cases provides victim services and advocacy in domestic violence cases in Montgomery County.

The Mobile County Commission has received two grants totaling $80,827 for prosecution, monitoring and training related to domestic violence cases in Mobile County.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering these grants from funds provided by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“These funds will help ensure that these units continue to serve as resources to serve victims and make communities safer,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of these vital services.”

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
