MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded more than $187,000 to improve public safety in six municipalities and three counties in central Alabama.
The grants to police departments in Calera, Clanton, Demopolis, Goodwater, Tallassee, Thorsby and sheriffs’ offices in Coosa, Dallas and Montgomery counties will be used to purchase equipment for those agencies.
“In order for law enforcement to successfully keep watch over our communities, they must be well equipped to track and respond to threats as they arise,” Gov Ivey said. “These grant funds will ensure local law enforcement have the tools they need to better protect the public.”
Gov. Ivey awarded the grants from funds supplied to the state through the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the awards.
“ADECA stands with Gov. Ivey in her support of our police and sheriff’s departments and the important role they play in enforcing our laws and keeping our communities safe,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
The Calera Police Department will use a $24,000 grant to update technology that will enhance response times to calls.
The Clanton Police Department will use a $24,000 grant to purchase traffic monitoring equipment.
The Coosa County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $23,666 to purchase special protective gear for its 10-member tactical team.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $19,517 to purchase communications equipment for its mobile emergency response headquarters.
The Demopolis Police Department will use a $23,940 grant to purchase laptop computer for patrol vehicles.
The Goodwater Police Department was awarded $24,000 to purchase computers for patrol vehicles.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $24,000 to purchase defibrillators for patrol vehicles and enable deputies to use them in first-responder calls involving heart attacks.
The Tallassee Police Department was awarded $24,000 and will use funds to purchase a new vehicle for patrolling school campuses and ensuring safety of students.
The Thorsby Police Department will use a $24,000 grant to purchase cameras for patrol vehicles.
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
