MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded nearly $130,000 to provide upgrades to six police departments in east Alabama.
The grants to the cities of Altoona, Moody, Piedmont, Pell City, Rainbow City and Roanoke will enable police departments in those municipalities to purchase equipment. Gov. Ivey awarded the grants from more than $750,000 in law-enforcement equipment funding allocated by the U.S. Department of Justice and administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
“It is an unfortunate fact that criminals never take a break from targeting the public, and law enforcement must always be equipped to keep crime in check,” Gov. Ivey said. “These grant funds will ensure local law enforcement have the tools they need to more safely and efficiently protect their communities.”
The Altoona Police Department was awarded $24,000 and will use the funds to upgrade computers and radios in several police vehicles.
The Moody Police Department was awarded $9,885 and will use the funds to enhance the patrol and school resource officer divisions.
The Piedmont Police Department received a $24,000 grant and will purchase assorted items to upgrade the department including a new patrol vehicle.
The Pell City Police Department was awarded $24,000 and will use the funds to purchase equipment as part of a rapid-response unit.
The Rainbow City Police Department was awarded a $23,370 grant to purchase heavy-duty protective body armor.
The Roanoke Police Department was awarded a $24,000 grant and will use the funds to replace an assortment of outdated equipment.
“Gov. Ivey realizes that while these cities value their police officers and the jobs they perform, there is not always money budgeted to purchase the equipment they need whether it be a new vehicle or computer for that vehicle,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to support Gov. Ivey in awarding these grants.”
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
