MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $200,000 grant to help Coosa County continue its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent further spread of the virus in the county.
The award is part of $40 million allocated to Alabama under a special Community Development Block Grant program funded from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
“To put covid-19 completely in the rearview, we must help local folks take necessary steps toward recovery,” Gov. Ivey said. “Alabama is in much better shape, Alabamians continue choosing to get vaccinated, and I am confident our best days are ahead. These funds will help Coosa County leaders take steps to assist their residents.”
Coosa County will use funds to provide rental and utility assistance, food distribution and to purchase health equipment. Other projects will include extending broadband services to a youth center and rehabilitating a community center to enable social distancing.
The funds were made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Alabama counties and entitlement communities receiving the CDBG-COVID funds were required to make an application with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
“We have seen these grants make an impact in Alabama counties as part of our state’s efforts to get past this pandemic,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to partner with Gov. Ivey in awarding these funds that I am certain will greatly benefit the residents of Coosa County.”
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
