Alabama Energy and Residential Codes Board

In March 2010, legislation was signed giving the Alabama Energy and Residential Codes (AERC) Board the authority to adopt mandatory residential and commercial energy codes for the entire state. It also gave the board the authority to adopt mandatory residential building codes for jurisdictions that had not implemented such a code prior to March 2010.

As stated in Section R101.5.1, Compliance Materials, of the Alabama Residential Energy Code (§305-2-4-.10, Code of Alabama 1975), the Alabama Energy and Residential Codes Board has the authority to approve compliance materials that meet the intent of the code. Because the Department of Energy’s ResCheck calculator is not compatible with the amendments made by Alabama, the ADECA Energy Division published a Request for Proposal (RFP) to award a grant for the development of a compliance calculator tool. The grant was awarded to Southface Energy Institute. The new compliance calculator tool is now available for download below. Compliance verified using this tool is an acceptable replacement for ResCheck..
