Gov. Ivey awards grants to help six Alabama cities lower energy costs

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded just over $1.1 million in grants to help six local governments save on operating costs by installing energy efficient lighting and upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

The grant recipients will use the funds from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program to replace outdated systems with modern, efficient equipment that is less expensive to operate.

“These upgrades represent a long-term investment that will lower energy costs for years to come, saving money in local budgets that can be put toward other needs,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the leaders who secured these grants for recognizing the benefits of focusing on energy efficiency.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants using funds made available by the U.S. Department of Energy.

“Taking steps to increase efficiency is a sensible and sustainable approach to lowering costs and saving taxpayer money,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in supporting these forward-looking projects.”

Below are the entities receiving grants and the projects they will fund.

City of Foley Utilities Board — $182,997 for HVAC upgrades at the Riviera Utilities headquarters.
