Gov. Ivey announces grant for Carrollton sewer system upgrade

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $345,947 grant to assist the town of Carrollton with the upgrade of a vital community service.

Funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission will help upgrade sewer and wastewater collection systems for residents and businesses in the Pickens County town.

“This proactive step by the town of Carrollton will ensure vital local water and sewer services will continue to operate efficiently well into the future,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to announce this funding for necessary utility upgrades that will benefit both local residents and businesses.”

The town will replace pumps at each of the system’s four lift stations. The existing pumps are more than 20 years old, and city officials say they have outlived their ability to operate at maximum effectiveness.

Additionally, the town will replace the aerator at the wastewater treatment facility with a larger and more efficient one.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the ARC grant.

“I commend Carrollton leaders for recognizing the need to upgrade their sewer system with newer and more efficient equipment, and I appreciate the Appalachian Regional Commission for recognizing the importance of this project and supplying the necessary funding,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

Gov. Ivey notified Carrollton Mayor Mickey Walker that the grant had been approved. The town has pledged $148,263 for the project.

ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments. The agency’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Pickens County, are part of the ARC region and eligible for funds.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
