Gov. Ivey awards grant to Geneva for emergency wastewater treatment repairs

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $200,000 grant to the city of Geneva for critical repairs to its wastewater treatment system.

The city will use the urgent-need Community Development Block Grant funds to replace a holding tank that is crucial to the Geneva Water Works and Sewer Board’s wastewater collection system. The deterioration of the holding tank has contributed to clogging issues that could raise the potential for sewage overflows, city leaders said.

“This project is necessary to prevent environmental contamination and for the city to continue providing reliable wastewater treatment for Geneva residents,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend city leaders for working to secure this important funding, and I am pleased to support this vital infrastructure upgrade.”

Construction of the new holding tank will be conducted in phases to avoid interruptions in wastewater treatment service. The new tank will continue to use existing equipment such as pumps and the electrical control board, which remain functional.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“When there is a pressing issue that could affect public health and safety, these urgent-needs funds can provide help for local leaders,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I am pleased to join Gov. Ivey in support of this project.”

Gov. Ivey notified Geneva Mayor David B. Hayes that the grant had been approved.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
