MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $49,884 grant for the city of Tuscaloosa to provide the Tuscaloosa Police Department with new equipment to better serve their community.
The grant was awarded through the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods program, a nationwide initiative that unites local, state and federal officials to develop strategies for combating crimes, particularly violent offenses.
“This program provides our law enforcement officers with the tools they need to combat crime and make communities safe places,” Gov. Ivey said. “Our law enforcement officers work tirelessly to increase safety in our communities, and I am pleased to award these funds to support these efforts in Tuscaloosa.”
The funds will enable the Tuscaloosa Police Department to purchase night vision goggles for the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.
The SWAT Team engages in a wide range of specialized operations including hostage rescue, barricaded subject response, high-risk warrant service and apprehension, terrorism response and other sensitive and high-risk situations.
City officials say securing night vision goggles will help the team operate safely and effectively in low-light and no-light environments, improving officer safety and mission success.
Project Safe Neighborhoods grants are administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice at the discretion of the United States Attorney’s offices of Alabama’s Northern, Middle and Southern Districts.
“ADECA is pleased to join with Gov. Ivey in support of the city of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa Police Department to better equip its officers to carry out high-risk missions,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
