MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $275,000 grant to the town of Shorter to fund infrastructure upgrades for an industrial development that will bring 30 new jobs.
Shorter will use the Community Development Block Grant funds to extend water and sewer service and pave an existing dirt road at the site of the planned development. Hiteco, a Korean company specializing in manufacturing high-tech industrial components, has committed to building a 50,000-square-foot facility in the Macon County town.
“This project will enhance Alabama’s already thriving manufacturing economy and, combined with other recent success, positions Shorter and Macon County well for future growth and economic development,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to award these funds in support of a development that will be a great benefit to the region and the state.”
The project site on Halla Bama Drive is designed to factor in future growth, including a potential future expansion to the initial development. The company designs and builds several types of manufacturing components used in woodworking, aerospace, automotive, plastics, metal fabrication and advanced materials industries.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“With all the major industries in the area, there will be plenty of demand for the tools manufactured at this new facility,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of this project, which is likely to also attract additional industries to the area.”
Gov. Ivey notified Shorter Mayor Willie May Powell that the grant had been approved.
ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
