MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $70,694 grant to the Jefferson County Commission to implement a substance abuse treatment program at the Jefferson County Jail.
The program combines medication and counseling to help inmates overcome their addictions to drugs and alcohol. The County Commission will work with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and SymboCor Correctional Healthcare to provide the program, which also includes regular drug testing and referrals to aftercare programs.
“This substance abuse treatment plan will help break the cycle of addiction that so often contributes to a criminal lifestyle,” Gov. Ivey said. “Inmates will have a better opportunity to turn their lives around and become productive citizens with the help of this program.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant with funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Treating addiction is crucial to improving lives and making communities safer,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of this program to help inmates become drug-free.”
ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
