Gov. Ivey awards grant to Calera for police equipment

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $32,917 grant to the city of Calera for equipment to help the police department prevent crime and enhance public safety.

The funds will purchase a brass catcher, which collects spent shell casings, and a portable walkthrough metal detector. The brass catcher is useful for ballistic testing because it collects cartridge casings immediately after they are fired, allowing investigators to more accurately examine marks that help identify firearms. The metal detector will be used to increase security at high-traffic locations, including at community events and in schools.

“Our law enforcement officers work hard to protect the public and should have access to all the resources they need,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to award these funds to equip the Calera Police Department with important crime-fighting tools.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant with funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“These purchases will make the community safer and strengthen police investigations,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of Calera’s efforts to address crucial public safety needs.”

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
