Gov. Ivey awards $150,000 grant to Luverne for new jobs, commercial growth

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $150,000 grant to the city of Luverne for a commercial project expected to spur economic growth and create jobs.

The Community Development Block Grant will be used for infrastructure upgrades needed for a new Cenergy Oil & Gas station on U.S. 331 in Luverne. The Andalusia-based company plans to employ 15 people at its new location.

“I am pleased to see a thriving Alabama business expand and bring new jobs to the area,” Gov. Ivey said. “This new service center will be in a prime location, provide an economic boost in Luverne and offer a new fuel and shopping option to travelers and residents alike.”

The project will include the extension of water and sewer service to the site and street improvements to ensure safe access to the new business. Cenergy will build the nearly 3,000-square-foot gas station where U.S. 331 meets Glenwood Avenue. The improvements will also make it possible for future development in the area, creating more businesses and job opportunities.

In addition to fuel service and a convenience store, Cenergy gas stations feature an outdoor retail store called Fletcher’s and a restaurant called Corner Market. The company currently employs 56 people at its three locations.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the CDBG program in Alabama.

“The infrastructure improvements made during this project will help support ongoing economic development in the city of Luverne,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in commending local leaders for working with Cenergy to bring this plan to fruition.”

Gov. Ivey notified Luverne Mayor Ed Beasley that the grant had been approved. The city is providing $37,500 for the project.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
