Gov. Ivey awards $120,000 to bring commerce and jobs to Daleville

MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $120,000 grant to bring new commerce and jobs to Daleville.

The Community Development Block Grant will be used to clear and prepare a site off U.S. Highway 84 and Alabama Highway 85 to build a grocery and convenience store that will benefit residents and travelers  and employ 15 people.

“This grant will pave the way for an Alabama-born business to grow and prosper while providing additional jobs and commerce for the city of Daleville,” Gov. Ivey said.

Site preparation will make way for Robert’s Grocery, which plans to invest $5.7 million in the venture. Robert’s Grocery is a local convenience store that sells basic groceries, deli-style food and has gasoline and diesel fuel pumps.

The business already has locations in Wicksburg and Taylor, employing a total of 42 people.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The project is an opportunity for the city of Daleville to encourage a new business, improve access to grocery items for residents and provide additional revenue for the city,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in supporting it.”

Gov. Ivey notified Mayor Jayme Stayton that the grant had been approved. Daleville has pledged $53,000 in matching local funds for the project.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
