Agencies assisting domestic violence victims in south Alabama receive grants from Gov. Ivey

 

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded more than $900,000 to aid victims of domestic violence in south Alabama.

The governor awarded four grants to agencies that provide services such as safe shelter, counseling and judicial assistance. Two additional grants were awarded to an agency that offers statewide training, guidance and support to domestic violence centers.

“The staff members of domestic violence shelter agencies in south Alabama and throughout the state work tirelessly to help victims and their families escape often harmful and hurtful situations,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend these organizations for their dedication and service.”

Gov. Ivey awarded the grants from funds provided to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the awards.

“ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in supporting these agencies for their compassionate and dedicated assistance for victims,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

Awarded funds are:

Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse (SABRA) Sanctuary Inc. – $50,000

The Selma-based organization provides shelter, judicial assistance and advocacy, transportation and other services for victims in Dallas, Greene, Marengo, Perry, Sumter and Wilcox counties.

Montgomery Area Family Violence Program (Family Sunshine Center) – $167,723

Operating out of Montgomery, the agency provides crisis intervention, safe shelter and multiple support services for victims of domestic violence, stalking and harassment and teen dating violence for victims in Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties.

Domestic Violence Intervention Center – $117,000

The center, based in Opelika, operates a 24-hour crisis line and provides safe shelter, case management assistance, counseling and other services for victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon, Randolph and Tallapoosa counties.

Columbus Alliance for Battered Women (Hope Harbour) – $52,041

The agency provides shelter and advocacy and more services for victims in Russell County.

The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence – $525,000 (two grants)

The Montgomery-based agency provides training and assistance for domestic violence agencies statewide to ensure victims have access to protection and recovery services.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
