MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $200,000 grant to enhance a recreational venue in Limestone County.
The grant, awarded through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, will enable the Limestone County Commission to add a trailhead and boat launch site on Sugar Creek.
“This project will provide access for canoeists, kayakers and others to enjoy a scenic waterway,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the Limestone County Commission for seeking to improve recreational outlets in their county, and I am pleased to support this project.”
The County Commission will construct a gravel road and launch site on 12 acres off Cotton Belt Road. In addition to the landing, a large, handicapped-accessible gravel parking area will be built.
The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a program of the U.S. Department of the Interior. The LWCF program is administered in Alabama by the Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
“The LWCF program has helped construct multiple parks, trails, ball fields and other recreational venues throughout our state to help Alabamians and others enjoy the outdoors,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in commending the Limestone County Commission for providing access to one of its waterways and enhancing the wilderness experience.”
Gov. Ivey notified Collin Daly, chairman of the Limestone County Commission, that the grant had been approved. Limestone County is providing the required $200,000 match for the project.
ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
