MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $433,000 grant to provide infrastructure needed for an automobile component manufacturer to locate in Macon County and create 35 jobs.
The grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission, a federal-state partnership, will provide sewer services necessary for Shinsung NVH USA to locate in the town of Shorter. Shinsung, a supplier for Hyundai, Kia and other automakers, is building a warehouse just north of Interstate 85.
The ARC grant will be combined with a $432,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded earlier this year by Gov. Ivey.
“Alabama’s economic climate and an eager workforce continue to be strong magnets for attracting automobile manufacturers and suppliers,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the town of Shorter and Macon County for their hard work in landing these and other types of industries in their area.”
Shinsung produces insulation and other parts for automobile frames to help reduce noise and vibration in vehicles, resulting in a smoother and more comfortable ride.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering both the ARC and CDBG awards.
“The Appalachian Regional Commission has been a valued partner to Macon County and other counties in Alabama’s ARC region,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in commending everyone involved in this venture that will help Macon County and the town of Shorter grow and prosper.”
Gov. Ivey notified Shorter Mayor Willie Mae Powell that the grant had been approved.
ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments. The agency’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Macon County, are part of the ARC region and eligible for funds.
ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
