Gov. Ivey announces grant for soccer complex in Loxley

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $500,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to fund the construction of a soccer complex with four regulation-size fields in Loxley.

The Billy J. Middleton Soccer Complex will include a paved access road and parking areas. The city will build a concession stand with bathrooms as an in-kind contribution and will also install water and sanitary sewer lines to service the building.

“This project will help keep Loxley healthy by encouraging young people to engage in physical activity and spend time outdoors,” Gov. Ivey said. “It also will build community by providing a place where families can gather and enjoy the outdoors.”

Lights will be installed for two of the four soccer fields, and an irrigation system will be constructed to allow for field maintenance. The layout will provide space for two more soccer fields to be added in the future. The total cost of the project is expected to be just over $1.5 million, with the city providing the amount not covered by the grant.

Congress created LWCF, a program of the U.S. Department of Interior, in 1965 to assist states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs manages the program in Alabama.

“Loxley is one of the fastest growing cities in the state, and this project will help meet its growing need for park facilities,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in commending city leaders for securing funding for this beneficial project.”

Gov. Kay Ivey notified Loxley Mayor Richard Teal that the grant had been approved.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
