Gov. Ivey annnounces grant to upgrade park in Sumter County

MONTGOMERY — A $261,223 grant announced by Gov. Kay Ivey will help breathe new life into a park in Sumter County.

The grant from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund will be used to upgrade the Sumter County Recreation Authority Park in Livingston, including resurfacing several outdoor basketball courts.

“I am pleased to approve this transformational grant to modernize the Sumter County Recreational Authority Park which has not been updated in nearly a half century,” Gov. Ivey said.  “This vital project is the beginning of much-needed upgrades to a recreational area that the people of Livingston and Sumter County will take pride in.”

In addition to resurfacing basketball courts, the upgrades also involve improving the access road, installing underground utility lines, constructing sidewalks and a parking area.

The nearly 35-acre park includes several buildings which the county plans to eventually renovate and put back into use.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a program of the U.S. Department of the Interior. The LWCF program is administered in Alabama by the Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

“I commend local leaders for their efforts and commitment to revive this park which has the potential to become a major focal point in the city,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in support of these renovations.”

Gov. Ivey notified Marcus Campbell, chairman of the Sumter County Commission, that the grant had been approved.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
