MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $100,000 grant to the town of New Brockton for sewer upgrades that will facilitate new business development, beginning with a truck stop and convenience store.
The Community Development Block Grant will fund the extension of sewer services to the planned location of MAXX Travel Stop at the corner of Byrd Mill Road and U.S. Highway 84, a major thoroughfare in the town of 1,428 people. If the travel stop is successful, future expansion is possible to provide overnight lodging for truck drivers.
“This project is an important steppingstone to future development in this growing rural Wiregrass community,” Gov. Ivey said. “The travel stop will provide a significant tax revenue boost to New Brockton and Coffee County, providing resources to attract new businesses to the area.”
The MAXX Travel Stop will include a 6,120-square-foot convenience store, a truck park for 18-wheelers and larger trucks, a deli, a dog park and restrooms with showers. The owner, Prisha Properties LLC, owns and operates convenience stores in Samson, Florala and Andalusia. The New Brockton travel stop will create eight new jobs.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“This is great news for the town of New Brockton and will benefit both residents and people just passing through,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of this project, which is sure to have a positive impact on the town.”
Gov. Ivey notified Mayor Charles Schieffer that the funding had been approved. The town of New Brockton is contributing $20,000 to the project.
ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
