Gov. Ivey awards $790,000 to assist victims of abuse

 MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded nearly $790,000 to assist victims of abuse in numerous Alabama counties.

The funds will be distributed to five agencies across the state to provide aid and resources for people affected by child abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence.

“People who have been victimized through assault and violence need safe spaces where they can receive the support and services necessary for healing,” Gov. Ivey said. “Each of these agencies provides or can refer victims to the resources where they can receive the help they need.”

Gov. Ivey awarded the grants using funds provided to the state through the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the awards.

“ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in providing funds that enable these agencies to assist victims in these tragic and unfortunate situations,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

Awarded funds are:

Family Resource Center of Northwest Alabama (Jasper) – $142,810

To provide shelter and housing services, advocacy and legal accompaniment, support and other services to domestic violence victims in Walker County.

Legal Services Alabama Inc. (Montgomery) – $29,321

To provide legal assistance for victims of assault, bullying, domestic and family violence and elder abuse and neglect.

Penelope House (Mobile) – $241,799

To provide emotional, shelter and housing and other services to victims of domestic violence in Choctaw, Clarke, Mobile and Washington counties.

Prescott House Child Advocacy Center (Birmingham) – $190,350

To provide emotional support, safety services and other assistance for child victims of neglect and other forms of abuse in Jefferson County.

SAN (Turning Point – Tuscaloosa)- $185,019

To provide emotional support, shelter and housing and other needed assistance for domestic violence victims in Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
