Gov. Ivey awards grants to assist assault and domestic violence victims in south and east Alabama

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded about $570,000 to aid victims of domestic violence and other personal crimes in south and east Alabama.

The governor awarded the grants to six agencies that provide services such as safe shelter, counseling and other services to victims.

“These agencies work tirelessly whether it is to assist someone in fleeing a potentially violent situation or helping them rebuild their lives,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend these organizations in south and east Alabama for their dedication to helping victims escape and recover from terrible ordeals.”

Gov. Ivey awarded the grants from funds provided to the state through the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the awards.

“ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in assisting these agencies in their compassionate and dedicated support of victims of crimes,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

Awarded funds are:

Domestic Violence Intervention Center (Opelika) – $121,720

The agency serves victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon, Randolph and Tallapoosa counties by providing emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling and more.

Columbus Alliance for Battered Women (Hope Harbour, Russell County) – $52,041

Based in Columbus, Ga., this group provides crisis intervention, advocacy services, emergency shelter and support services for adult and child victims of domestic violence in Russell County.

Wiregrass Angel House (Dothan) – $136,359

This agency will use funds to continue to provide advocacy and court accompaniment, emotional support and other services for victims of robbery and family members of homicide victims. The agency services people in Barbour, Bullock, Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike counties.

Montgomery Area Family Violence Program (Montgomery)- $162,442

Also known as the Family Sunshine Center, the agency will use funds to serve victims of domestic violence, stalking and teen dating violence in Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties. The center offers crisis intervention, shelter, counseling, advocacy and related services.

The House of Ruth (Dothan) – $96,720

Serving people in Barbour, Bullock, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike counties, the agency provides emotional support and court accompaniment for victims of domestic and family violence.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
