Governor awards grants to statewide organizations against domestic abuse, sexualt assault

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded more than $700,000 in grants to two organizations that provide resources, training and technical assistance to professionals that serve domestic violence and sexual assault victims statewide.

“These organizations offer a lifeline to people in crisis and also use education and awareness campaigns to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence and sexual assault,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend these professionals for all they do on behalf of victims in all parts of Alabama.”

The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence has received two grants. The Montgomery-based organization will use its grant of $50,010 to support programs that provide direct assistance to individuals seeking financial independence from their abuser. It will use a $475,000 grant for general services including emergency housing, advocacy, training for professionals who respond to domestic violence, community education, outreach and prevention services.

The Alabama Coalition Against Rape will use its grant of $182,248 to provide training and technical assistance to affiliated community agencies and first responders to rape and sexual assault throughout the state. The organization is based in Montgomery and provides direct services to victims in counties without a member rape crisis center.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants with funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“Victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse deserve professional assistance in a timely manner,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in support of these organizations that help people in communities throughout the state.”

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
