MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $300,000 grant to assist the city of Livingston in expanding infrastructure to create new jobs and foster economic growth.
The Community Development Block Grant will provide sewer services on the west side of Interstate 59 in the city. The sewer system expansion will enable the construction of three new businesses including a hotel. The businesses are expected to help create 33 jobs.
“This project will bring needed jobs and commerce for the Black Belt area of Alabama,” Gov Ivey said. “I am pleased to award these funds, and I am optimistic that this will lead to additional good economic news for Livingston, Sumter County and west Alabama.”
In addition to the new Cobblestone Hotel, the new commercial area will include a gas station/travel center and a restaurant.
The project will involve extending the sewer system from the eastern side of Interstate 59 to the west side by boring under the highway.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“In recent years, ADECA joined Gov. Ivey to support several economic development projects along Interstate 59 south of Tuscaloosa, and this project is a welcomed addition because it means new jobs and new commerce,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I commend developers and local officials for their work in a project that should pay dividends for Livingston and Sumter County.”
Gov. Ivey notified Mayor James Dial that the grant had been approved. The city is providing $187,000 in local funds for the project.
ADECA administers a wide range of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
