MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey awarded a $500,000 grant to ensure the city of Clanton can maintain a safe and reliable water supply for its customers.
Community Development Block Grant funds will be used to replace the Clanton Water Works and Sewer Board’s backup pump at its water supply site. The current diesel-powered backup pump, which is aging and failing, is activated when the main electric-powered pump is offline due to a power outage.
“A consistent and plentiful source of clean water is critical for businesses and residents in every city and town in Alabama,” Gov. Ivey said. “Replacing this necessary pump is essential to ensuring that the city of Clanton can meet its water supply needs now and in the future.”
The backup pump, like the main pump, draws water from its main source at Lake Mitchell and supplies it to the water authority’s nearly 5,000 residential and business customers. Without a functional backup pump the water system would have only about a 24-hour water supply in its reservoirs for its customers and no way to produce more.
City officials say replacing the backup pump will ensure water transportation to storage tanks and ensure a more durable and efficient operating system. Replacement of the pump will also meet the system’s needs as the city continues to grow.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“ADECA is pleased to be a partner with Gov. Ivey and the city of Clanton to ensure the city’s water customers have confidence their water needs can be met,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
Gov. Ivey notified Clanton Mayor Jeff Mims that the grant had been approved. The city is providing $100,000 in local funding for the project. City officials say additional outside monies have also been obtained for the project.
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
