Governor announces grant to upgrade Oakman water system

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $500,000 grant to ensure that the Oakman water system provides its customers with a reliable source of fresh water.

The grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission will enable the Oakman Water Works to increase the size of its main water line, ensuring the system has adequate capacity to meet the demands of its customers.

“A plentiful and reliable supply of water is essential for households and businesses,” Gov. Ivey said. “This project will give Oakman Water Works customers peace of mind, knowing they have enough water for drinking, cooking, washing and other daily uses.”

Oakman Water Works plans to replace an undersized line with a larger line, allowing for increased water flow from its supplier, the Jasper Waterworks and Sewer Board. The upgrades will enhance the water supply and reduce the risk of outages or disruptions especially during peak usage periods.

In January 2024, low water pressure caused a two-week period where more than half of the Oakman water system customers were without water while others experienced insufficient water flow in homes, businesses and schools.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program in Alabama.

“For more than 50 years the Appalachian Regional Commission has responded to the needs of people living in Alabama’s ARC region. This project is great example of that ongoing commitment,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I join Gov. Ivey in commending local leaders for guiding this project to a successful solution.”

ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments. The agency’s mission is to innovate, partner and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Walker County, are part of the ARC region and eligible for funds.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
