Alternative Transportation Fuels Program
The Energy Division's Alternative Transportation Fuels Program encourages and promotes the use of alternative transportation fuels as a way to increase the overall efficiency of the transportation system, improve air quality, and promote energy independence. An extensive network of alternative fuel stakeholders has been established and is working to accelerate the availability and use of alternative fuels, especially renewable fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol, in Alabama . Clean Biofuel Corridors are being developed to provide public access to E85 and B20 biodiesel along interstate I-65 and Appalachian Development Corridors X and V in the state.
Alabama was recently selected as one of 10 states to participate in the National Governors Association / General Motors E85 Pump Partnership Program. The Energy Division is leading this initiative and has established an E85 taskforce to indentify target locations and resources to expand E85 infrastructure in Alabama. An Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Program is being developed to encourage retail participation in the project.
The Energy Division is also encouraging the use of clean burning biodiesel in Alabama school buses through the Biofuels for Schools Program . This grant program provides up to $2500 to Alabama public school systems to cover the cost of cleaning existing diesel fuel storage tanks in preparation for storing biodiesel
